Your Gateway to England’s Most Beautiful Walking Route
Discover the ultimate walking holiday at Alfriston Cabins, perfectly positioned directly on the legendary South Downs Way. Our award-winning accommodation offers tired hikers the perfect combination of comfort, convenience, and stunning natural beauty, making us the ideal base for exploring one of England’s most spectacular National Trails.
Perfectly Positioned for Walkers
Located high on a hill within the South Downs National Park, our woodland cabins and shepherd huts offer the unique advantage of walks directly from your door. No need for lengthy transfers or complicated logistics – simply step outside and you’re immediately on some of the most beautiful walking terrain in England.
Our location next to the historic village of Alfriston places you at the heart of the South Downs Way network. Many of our guests walk or cycle to our cabins and then continue to complete part or all of this iconic 100-mile route. Whether you’re planning a multi-day hiking adventure or prefer day walks returning to comfort each evening, our position couldn’t be more perfect.
Accommodation Designed for Hikers
After challenging days on the trails, you deserve comfort and relaxation. Our oak-framed woodland cabins (Badgers Rest and Foxes Hollow) sleep up to 4 people, making them ideal for walking groups or families. Each cabin features a cozy log burner for warming up after bracing walks, a fully equipped kitchen for hearty meals, and comfortable sleeping arrangements with a double bed on the mezzanine and a double sofa bed downstairs.
For couples or solo walkers, our shepherd huts (Robins Retreat, Woodpecker Hill, and Owls Nest) provide intimate accommodation with stunning views across the Cuckmere valley. The king-size bed in each hut folds away easily, providing extra space for spreading out maps, planning routes, or simply stretching after long walks.
Post-Walk Relaxation & Recovery
Nothing beats soaking tired muscles in a wood-fired hot tub while surrounded by the peaceful South Downs Way landscape. Available for stays of two nights or more at Foxes Hollow, Badgers Rest, and Robins Retreat (£50 per night), these therapeutic soaks are the perfect way to recover from challenging hikes. The hot tub at Robins Retreat features a serene paddle circulation system, ideal for quiet contemplation of the day’s adventures.
Gather around the firepit in the evening to share stories of the day’s discoveries, plan tomorrow’s route, and enjoy the spectacular starry skies that make the South Downs so special. Our firepit hire (£22.50) includes everything you need for the perfect hiker’s evening.
Spectacular Walking Opportunities
Beyond the South Downs Way itself, our location opens up incredible walking possibilities. The nearby Seven Sisters Country Park offers 280 hectares of dramatic chalk cliffs, meandering river valleys, and open grassland. This diverse landscape provides walks for all abilities, from gentle river strolls to challenging cliff-top adventures with breathtaking coastal views.
Explore Friston Forest’s waymarked walking trails through ancient beech woods, or follow the River Cuckmere through its special nature reserve and site of special scientific interest. Keep your eyes open for diverse wildlife – foxes, badgers, woodpeckers, butterflies, herons, and swans all call this area home.
Hiker-Friendly Services
We understand that walkers have specific needs. Our contact-free self-check-in means you can arrive tired and get straight to relaxing. We offer electric car charging for those who drive to walking start points, and our private hire electric vehicle service can collect you from local train stations, perfect for those completing linear walks.
Stock up on energy with our home-made and local produce, including fresh eggs from our own chickens, local sausages, and hearty provisions perfect for packed lunches or post-walk feasts.
Your Walking Holiday Awaits
Whether you’re tackling the complete South Downs Way, exploring day walks, or combining hiking with relaxation, Alfriston Cabins provides the perfect base. Join the many walkers who’ve discovered why our location, comfort, and hospitality make every walking holiday unforgettable.
